CHAPTER II
Just Under

Another special request was waiting for him. This particular client always paid well - very well. So Max ignored his usual routine and set out right away.

Max didn't have a conscience. He couldn't be embarassed. He had no compunction about anything. When others might hesitate, Max wasted no time. In fact, when Max found out that he was chasing after someone in the witness protection program, he just worked harder. And when he learned that his client intended to blow the guy away, he worked harder still. "It means more money," Max would say to himself. "With this kind of money, I'm done. I can retire, leave the country and never be heard from again - not by this employer - not by anyone."

"It's not my problem. I just provide a service. What people do with the information I provide has nothing to do with me," he would say. "I'm not a party to it." The police could never prove otherwise.

Finally he had something to go on. He packed his bag, grabbed a coat and was gone before anyone noticed.

Like hundreds of other travelers, Max played the part of a loving grandfather. He was so inconspicuous that witnesses to his departure never even noticed him.
